O'Neil she was still in high school year at the time of the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. She made it to the top hundred round following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and bottom 2. The judges were shocked by this and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following numerous outstanding performance. Judge Werner said, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner of her Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
